Video Installation

Taryn Derlin, from the Celtic words for Oak and Tender Heart, is an aerial dance film and multiple screen video installation. In a world of mediated imagery, Taryn Derlin is a meditation on nature spirits, part of a series of contemplative, Digital Altar Pieces. I created the piece together with gorgeous aerialist artist Chelsea O’Brian (chelseao.com), a director and producer in her own right who had previously collaborated with filmmaker, photographer and visual artist Sam Taylor-Wood, and site-specific Choreographer, Director and Producer Noémie Lafrance. She is also the inventor of the Aerial Kite. The beautiful music accompanying the clip was contributed by composer and long-time collaborator Michael Neil (michaelneil.eu).

The video installation piece is composed of multiple angles, all running simultaneously as individual, looped projections, onto a sculptural, three-dimensional installation of silk screens. Below is a clip of segments from the widest angle, showing the full breadth of the tree, and Chelsea’s progression across it.
It took 4 weeks of venturing across the British South West, across Cornwall, Dartmoor, Exmoor, and South Wales, to find the right tree. We did eventually find the perfect oak tree, on the outskirts of Bristol, and shot the piece over a couple of days, just in time for Chelsea had to head back to the States.
